SCSR Website Will Close In 30 Days

Posted on August 15th, 2008

Due to lack of interest and participation by club members and officers, this website will be closed in 30 days - September 15, 2008. I have not received the support I was promised and I just don’t have the time to do everything myself. Without the support and encouragement of the members and officers, I don’t have any enthusiasm to put into the venture.

I was happy to hear that more than 2 dozen people registered through the website for the last Show & Shine. It was a clear indication that a website could be supported and would get traffic from people interested in your local car club and in Plumas County. It meant there was a promising future for the website, as well as the growth of the club.

It takes more than someone who can manipulate graphics and develop a website presence to keep it going. It takes the active participation of the club members and officers to forward content on a regular basis. Websites like this need to have fresh articles and stories to keep the interest levels high. News of other car clubs, enthusiast groups, scheduled events and shows should be a priority. Features about club members and their projects and finished rides can add to the value of this website.

My own financial situation will not allow me to continue to host a website and keep up with the domain registration without the help of those who this website represents. Although most of the software used on the server is free, it still takes considerable time and resources to build and maintain a website. I never minded doing it when I thought it would be a team effort and I was contributing to something that offered me personal satisfaction and camaraderie.

Unfortunately, my life is much shorter than I planned and I have no interest in doing something like this alone and which isn’t much fun. I prefer to spend the too few years I have left working with people who care and will have a vested interest in continuing the work I started for them when my time is up. I s’pose we all want to leave a legacy that means something. This is what I do best now, but when there is no interest, it would not make a good legacy.

The domain can be turned over to any club officer so that you will have it for the future. You don’t have to have a website, but you should at least maintain the domain name (SierraCascadeStreetRodders.com) in case you want to have a website sometime in the future. If the domain name goes back to the public pool, it will very likely be taken by someone who will use it as some income generating directory type site - because it has some value as a cataloged website in search engines already (I try to do my job well). A club officer needs to contact me so I can transfer the ownership to you. The domain name comes up for renewal May 31, 2009 and the registration fee is about $10.00 per year. I will not renew the domain name and it will go into the public pool on that date. I will not send you reminders.

I am sorry I couldn’t devote more energy and resources to your website. Good luck to all of you and your car club. I will continue to look forward to enjoying the Show & Shines.

Your IT Weenie Had Fun in the 3D World

Posted on June 7th, 2008

Your IT weenie, Jim McClainFor you car guys and gals that aren’t Internet savvy, IT stands for Internet Technology. I thought about using the term “webmaster,” but it’s a good bet most of you don’t know what that means either. I’m the guy who works on the website for you - pointing and clicking and trying to make Sierra Cascade Street Rodders dot COM as cool as some of your cars.

Which brings me back to the subject of this post. The 3D world I am referring to is The 19th Annual Show & Shine I attended today - and The 3rd Annual Graffiti Night, sponsored by the Quincy Elks Club last night too. I had a BLAST! I’m sure those of you who were there saw me gliding around on my own cool ride, grinning ear to ear. That’s because the show was one of the best I’ve attended here in our corner of the world. It made me proud to be your webmaster.

We’ll post a full report of the Show & Shine for 2008 and the Graffiti Night, along with lots of pictures later. I think it would be great to get the words of some of the club members, mainly because I’m not sure my own version is worthy enough. So, if you are a club member, or someone who attended and would like to offer your own first-hand report, please use the contact form and send your thoughts through the ether to me. Let me know if you have pictures you’d like to post too and I’ll tell you how to get them to me. Remember, this is your website, SCSR Members, and it will be so much better with your participation.

Let me close this now by giving a hardy congratulations to Craig “Goose” Helrich, who was this year’s Best of Club award winner. That’s a beautiful 1933 Chevy Coupe. Goose’s car will be the club’s logo car for the next year. I haven’t replaced the original one as of this post date, but I hope to get it done shortly. I think it’d be great to feature each year’s BoC in the logo. Here’s a picture of the happy winner. Until the next post, drive safe.

This Is YOUR Website, SCSR!

project carShould I first apologize for taking so long to get this site up and running? Well, I would, but you guys shoulda had a website pit stop a loooong time ago, so we all kinda dragged our asses, didn’t we? ;) But I am really happy that I was able to do this and I am proud of the work I put into it. Like any decent project involving our beloved hotrods and custom cars, trucks and bikes, it still needs work - and a whole lotta content to keep the site fresh and the traffic flowin’.

I will do my best to get things organized and the announcements posted for the Show & Shine and Grafitti Night. There’s lots of pictures to put up too and I am as anxious as you are to see your prized ride featured here on the website. But I’d like to use this first post to draw your attention to a couple things I need help with. » Read the whole entry »
